Scientific Padua

A tour through botany, medicine and astronomy

Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden) and the Giardino della Biodiversità (Garden of Biodiversity)

The oldest botanical garden in Europe, it was created in 1545 as the “Orto dei Semplici” of the Faculty of Medicine.
Among the important historical plants it houses, we recommend you see the palma di San Pietro (European fan palm), planted in 1585. Other than being the oldest in the garden, it’s known as “Goethe’s palm tree”, after the German poet admired it in 1786.
For several years now in the gardens, a new scientific place of interest has been available to the public: the Giardino della Biodiversità, a beautiful greenhouse with 1300 species of plants, that will take you on a wonderful journey through our planet’s vegetation.

Museo dell’Osservatorio Astronomico (Astronomical Observatory Museum)

Set in the Torre della Specola, originally the tower of the ancient medieval castle of Padua. During the course of the museum, you will walk through halls frequented by Paduan astronomers. You will also be able to see the various instruments used to make their observations, built in the 18th century, along with other meteorological tools.

Musme

A surprising museum that houses and values the history of the role of medicine and science in Padua that suits visitors of all ages, including children.
