How Codfish Arrived in Veneto
Not everyone knows that baccalà came to Veneto thanks to a Venetian nobleman, Pietro Querini, a merchant and senator of the Venetian Republic (1400–1448). In 1431, Querini was caught in a terrible storm while sailing on his ship, the “Querina,” and shipwrecked on Rost Island in the Lofoten archipelago of Norway, along with a few surviving sailors. The Venetians were welcomed by local fishermen, whose livelihood revolved around fishing and drying cod. Upon returning to Venice, Pietro Querini brought this new food with him.

In this way, he introduced the product within the borders of the Serenissima—Vicenza and Padua—thus spreading stockfish, stokkfisk in Norwegian, meaning “stick fish”.

The historical reenactment, featuring Venetian costumes from the 1400s, will begin on Sunday, November 10, at 11:00 AM from Palazzo del Bo’ and will wind through Via San Canziano, Via S. Martino e Solferino, Via delle Piazze, Via Soncin, and Piazza Duomo. Here, visitors can taste this delicacy: creamy stockfish.
